The New York Mets are coming off a solid 5-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night, but postgame we received some unfortunate news from manager Carlos Mendoza. After the win, he told the media that centerfielder Jose Siri has a fractured tibia and will be heading to the IL for an extended period of time.
Siri was injured in the second inning of Saturday’s game against the A’s, when he fouled off a pitch into his left leg and had to come out of the game due to not being able to put any weight on that leg.
Siri has been slumping at the plate so far this season (1 for 20, 1 RBI), but he’s still been an important piece for the Mets. He’s given them great defense in centerfield, and has been impressive on the base paths with 2 stolen bases and 5 runs scored.
In his statements to the media, Mendoza said that Tyrone Taylor will continue to get the majority of the reps in center field. He did mention that they have other options for CF as well in Starling Marte and Jesse Winker, both who have been platooning at DH so far for the Mets this year.
The timetable for Siri’s return is unclear at this time, but Mendoza did say he would be out for a while.
